Forest Service Email Request

To the Kelly Canyon Nordic Area (KCNA) outdoor enthusiasts who have so much enjoyed and volunteered countless hours over the years in keeping this recreational asset available to the local community: Below is a Public Appeal from the Idaho Falls Ski Club (IFSC), the Idaho Falls Alpine Club and many others -

BACKGROUND: In the last year a conflict has arisen with the Kelly Canyon Ski Hill regarding continued public parking along the County Road adjacent to the ski hill and just below the Forest Service Gate on Forest Service Road #218 which is a primary access to the KCNA. Attempts among all parties to fully resolve this situation for reasonable public parking and trail grooming equipment access have largely been unsuccessful to date. The consensus of the IFSC Board is to promote an 'email drive' to the Forest Service in an attempt to encourage the agency to fully resolve the KCNA public parking issue with the Kelly Mountain Ski Hill. This message campaign would be coordinated among various local groups including the IFSC, the Idaho Falls Alpine Club, local outdoor groups and a general public appeal. We could perhaps also copy Congressman Mike Simpson with similar communications to encourage a timely resolution. With this in mind, below are the key themes the IFSC is distributing to local groups with encouragement to directly contact the FS representatives herein listed:

SAMPLE MESSAGE: TO: Ms. Tracy Hollingshead, District Ranger/Palisades Ranger District Caribou-Targhee National Forest,
cc: Mr. Brent Larson, Caribou-Targhee National Forest Supervisor,

"I am contacting you to express my concern about recently restricted public parking and trail grooming equipment access for the long-standing Kelly Canyon Nordic Area (KCNA) contiguous to the Kelly Mountain Ski area within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. As you are aware, the KCNA has provided a popular public winter recreational opportunity for the community for over twenty years. I applaud the effort initiated earlier by the Forest Service to attempt to resolve this KCNA parking conflict with the Kelly Canyon Ski Hill which maintains a Use Permit with the Forest Service. It's my understanding this parking conflict has not yet been resolved to the satisfaction of the Forest Service to allow 24/7 public parking, either along the public road adjacent to the ski hill as traditionally allowed over the many years of KCNA operation, or through use of either of the parking areas contiguous to the Kelly Canyon Ski Hill. Perhaps as proposed by the Forest Service, implementation of a "Park and Ski" Program may be an appropriate solution. I hereby strongly encourage the Forest Service to continue its support of the Kelly Canyon Nordic Area by concluding a satisfactory resolution of public parking and trail grooming access so that the local community can continue to enjoy winter access and recreation on the nearby National Forest Service public lands. We thank you for the Forest Service's support to date and look forward to your responding action to this request."
