Thanks go to the work crew for their elbow grease and efforts at the Nordic Area already this year.
Alan Crockett, Don Gosswiller, Tom McLaughlin, Bill Lloyd, Glen Hayes, Norm Kramer and Ken Katsma have already laid the floors, chopped the wood, and cleared some trails.  If you would like to help with this effort, please contact Norm Kramer

Overview... The Idaho Falls Ski Club is a primary sponsor of the free, volunteer operated Kelly Canyon Nordic Area (KCNA) which is located in 6 square miles of the Targhee National Forest in the Big Hole Mountains above the Kelly Canyon Ski Resort. The Area offers trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing plus opportunities for easily accessible, relatively safe backcountry skiing. Snowmobiles are excluded from this Area when the Kelly Canyon Ski Resort is open, except for cross-country ski trail grooming and other Area maintenance operations. The snow quality is generally high, and the terrain varies from steep gradients to gently rolling, with many spectacular vistas to add to your enjoyment. Moose, deer and other wildlife are frequently seen on the trails.

The Area includes 24 miles of cross-country ski trails, about 5 miles of snowshoe trails and a variety of backcountry skiing experiences including a parked, north-facing powder ski slope where you can sample backcountry skiing with minimum effort and hazard. The KCNA starts around at about 5900ft. and reaches elevations as high as 6700ft. A pleasant warming hut can be found at the base of a north-facing backcountry ski slope for day or overnight use, while a second warming hut is located at Morgan Summit.

The roads and some cross-country ski trails are machine groomed for easier and safer access to the many trails that have been cut through the woods. Volunteers perform all trail grooming in the winter and summertime trail maintenance and development.

How to Get There... The KCNA can by be reached by following the signs to the Kelly Canyon Ski Area off of US 26 east of Ririe and east of Heise. (A map can be found at www.skikelly.com.) Follow the signs to the alpine ski area and park your vehicle in the lower lot designated for cross-country skiers. The trails can be accessed by heading uphill on FR 218 above the ski area lodge. The KCNA shares this road with alpine skiers so be alert for downhill ski and snowboard traffic.

Warming Huts...Two warming huts are located in the KCNA, one at the base of Norm's Hill near the east end of Kelly Mountain and the other at Morgan Summit. The Kelly Mountain Hut is available for overnight use by contacting Glen Hayes at 523-6839 or hayesbg@ida.net.
